From Plant to Product: The Sustainable Processing of Bamboo for Clothing

At Viking, our love for the outdoors inspires us to create products that not only serve our customers but also benefit the planet. Our Bamboo Line is a testament to this commitment, harnessing the incredible properties of bamboo to create clothing that is as kind to your skin as it is to the Earth.

Nature’s Powerhouse: Bamboo

Bamboo is a marvel of nature. Despite its strong stems, bamboo fibers create a fabric that is remarkably soft and comfortable. But the benefits of bamboo extend far beyond comfort. This fast-growing plant offers a solution to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.

Bamboo vs. Cotton: A Green Comparison

  • Growth Efficiency: Bamboo grows incredibly fast, with some species growing up to a meter per day. This means that bamboo can be harvested much more frequently than cotton, making it a more efficient and sustainable resource.
  • Space and Water Usage: Bamboo requires half the space to produce the same amount of fiber as cotton. Additionally, it does not require artificial irrigation, relying solely on rainwater.
  • No Chemicals Needed: Unlike cotton, which often requires pesticides and fertilizers, bamboo's natural anti-fungal and antibacterial properties mean it can be grown without these harmful chemicals

The Ecological Benefits of Bamboo

The cultivation and processing of bamboo offer numerous environmental advantages:

  • Improved air quality: Bamboo absorbs five times more carbon dioxide and produces 35% more oxygen than deciduous trees, helping to combat greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
  • Soil Preservation: Bamboo roots remain in the soil after harvesting, which helps prevent soil erosion and promotes soil health.
  • Water Conservation: With its natural moisture-absorbing properties, bamboo does not require additional irrigation, conserving precious water resources.

Sustainable Sourcing and Processinge

Our bamboo fabric's journey from plant to product involves four key steps, each designed to ensure minimal environmental impact and maximum sustainability.

Sourcing: Our bamboo is grown on regenerative farmland in northern China, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification ensures that our bamboo is sourced from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.

Harvesting: Bamboo can grow up to a meter a day. To prevent the bamboo from spreading and to reduce the risk of soil erosion, only the top part of the bamboo is cut. This sustainable harvesting method allows the bamboo to continue growing and regenerating, maintaining the health of the ecosystem.

Processing: We use sodium hydroxide, a naturally sourced and safe substance, to produce bamboo fabric. This process involves mixing the soft inner layer of bamboo with a natural solvent. Thanks to this closed-loop process, no harmful substances are released, preventing pollution of the environment and atmosphere.

Weaving: Ultra-thin yarn can be formed from bamboo viscose and blended with other materials to create custom fabrics. This versatility allows us to design a wide range of comfortable, durable, and eco-friendly clothing.

Superior Comfort and Performance

Bamboo fabric is not just environmentally friendly; it is also incredibly functional and comfortable:

  • Temperature Regulation: Bamboo fibers regulate temperature effectively, keeping you cool in the heat and warm in the cold
  • Moisture Management: The fabric's high hygroscopic properties absorb moisture and allow it to evaporate quickly, keeping you dry and fresh.
  • Antibacterial Properties: Natural antibacterial properties reduce the need for frequent washing and help prevent odor.
  • Gentle on Skin: Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin.

Certifications: A Promise of Quality

Our commitment to quality and sustainability is backed by several certifications:

  • FSC Certified: Ensures responsible forest management.
  • Organic Content Standard (OCS): Verifies the organic content in our products.
  • Organic Agriculture Europe: Guarantees our bamboo is grown without synthetic chemicals or GMOs.
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Certifies that our textiles are free from harmful substances.
